Cruise Attacks!

No, it's not a spirited defense of modern psychiatry and Matt Lauer. Sorry. But I have been wondering what changes have been made to the plot of "The War of the Worlds" for the benefit of The Tom Cruise Action Hero Character. In H.G. Wells's original version, the protagonist was an only an observer of great events. And the Martians are killed by indigenous earth bacteria. How will they die this time around? Exploding gum?

Perhaps Spielberg will remain more true to the original than I expect, reprising Minority Report's Tom Cruise Escaping and Hiding Character. But in order for TCEaHC to carry the whole film, there might have to be some human conspiracy element for him to unmask at the end. For example, perhaps some element of the government knew about the invasion in advance (room for an intelligence "fixing" angle here), or maybe there's someone who wants to get their hands on the Martian technology for the "weapons division" (where haven't we seen this device?). And the little optimistic voice I usually ignore has not entirely ruled out Cruise pulling off a credible Everyman character. You know, like he does in real life.
