Even evil people do things for a reason

In a discussion forum on the London lawyers' site rollonfriday.com, a Muslim lawyer made the following point, which struck me as well put, if not original:

"I think they're evil [i.e., terrorists] but even evil people do things for a reason. You’re mistaking my discussing their (evil) reasoning for justifying their actions. It's a common mistake that’s held up progress in the 'war' on terror ever since it started."
