Take my poll on backcountry camping!
This stems from a discussion I had today with a friend (female) who said it would never even occur to her to go backcountry camping (i.e., overnight backpacking) by herself, and that she would never do so out of concern for her personal safety. She polled a few of her friends and these were their responses:
- What the hell kinda question is that? Probably not. In fact I think its hellishly poor idea. I don't want to have to fly in a helicopter to find you. [Male--He can't believe I would ask such a moronic question.]
- You never should go hiking alone. [Female]
- Yosemite I think would be fine BUT you need to take like a flare gun or something in case something happens. [Female]
- [Male] says NO in huge capital letters.
- [Female #1] thinks you are on crack.
- NOOOOOOOO. You are a beautiful young woman and I'm afraid we still live in a BAD world with EVIL people. I say no no no. Sorry -- I'm sure that's not what you want to hear, my dear-- [Male]
Anyway, please take the poll and then return here to leave your comments.

I'm a worrier, and would fret about being lost and alone and then I'd start to hear the banjo rift from Deliverance in my head and wouldn't be able to sleep.
I don't love the idea that there are places as a woman I shouldn't go (alone) but solo camping in the backcountry feels like a bad plan. Maybe if I was scrappy like Yumi - but I'm not.
Thank you, TP Gal. The point I was trying to make was whether I like it or not, it just isn't safe. I would twist my ankle, get bitten by poisonous somethings and mugged by Grizzly Adams...but could be glad I got a really amazing photo of the sun setting over some random lake? Nah, I will let {unnamed male friend who doesn't trust snakes} take those pics and enjoy them on the blog. Or I would hike with a group...and to the afore mentioned person's chagrin, i would also bring the dog.
