Rings for mortal men . . .

There seem to be a lot of people--men mostly--on TV, in movies, in tennis matches, etc. wearing plain wedding-band-type rings on chains around their necks. Has anyone else noticed this trend? Did this originate with the "Lord of the Rings" films?
