Leadership secrets of the Al Qaeda: When winning, propose a truce
Some analysts saw the message as a triumph for the leader of Al Qaeda.Oh, come on! First of all, a "victory" and a "triumph" are hardly the same thing. Second, what does it take besides a cassette recorder, a cassette, batteries and a guy with a horse? Third, proposing a truce? The leader? How triumphant is that? Where's their Rudolf Hess? Fourth, what's up with the bit about the "unlucky quartet of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz"? Wolfowitz was approved to head the World Bank last March and has been doing so since June. Is everyone super sure this tape is from December and hasn't been sitting for a year in the drawer marked "open in event the U.S. kills a bunch of us"? Also, of course, one analyst is not "some."
"The fact that he was able to record the message, deliver it and broadcast is in itself victory for him," said Muhammad Salah, Cairo bureau chief for pan-Arab daily Hayat and an expert on Islamist groups. - New York Times, January 19, 2006
(Yes, I realize this literally says "leadership secrets of the the base." It seemed to make the headline flow better, and I think that Al Qaeda's brand manager may have recently been vaporized.)
