Who decides which terrorist groups get to have a spuriously distinct "political wing"?
Israel, however, has chosen to treat the political members of Hezbollah as if they were fighters. And by targeting the civilian wing of the group, which supplies much of the humanitarian aid and social protection for the poorest people in the south, they are targeting civilians. Salon, July 28, 2006How come the IRA got to have one and Hezbollah gets to have one but Al Qaeda doesn't? It hardly seems fair.
Remember back when we said we would make no distinction between terrorist groups and those who knowingly support or harbor them? Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it? I think that rules out any separate, protected status for so-called "political" or "civilian" or "humanitarian" wings of groups that practice terrorism. But the implication of the Salon quote is that Israel is barbaric for having "chosen" not to recognize such sophistical distinctions within terrorist groups.
