Pelosi's unaccountable choice of battles
Hoyer, 67, had been heavily favored to win the race until Sunday, when Pelosi -- in a move that shocked even her staff -- openly threw her support to Murtha, despite a prior vow to stay neutral. She said in a letter that she was swayed by Murtha's early call for a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, and that he would be best positioned to lead a new Democratic majority. - Washington Post, November 16, 2006I can't for the life of me understand why Nancy Pelosi backed Jack Murtha for majority leader. Sure, he has credibility as a war critic who isn't "yellow." But he's ethically tainted, an unindicted co-conspirator during the Abscam sting investigation, and greatly out of step with his party's mainstream on many issues. The vote wasn't even close, suggesting Pelosi didn't totally go to bat for him, or wields a lighter bat than it was prudent to reveal.
Evidently Pelosi has some kind of longstanding grudge against Steny Hoyer because they have clashed for leadership posts in the past. She seems not to have heard the maxim that if you're going to kill a snake with a shovel, make sure you sever the head on the first blow. I want to say Lyndon Johnson said that, but I'm having trouble documenting it. In any event, being on the wrong side of a 149-86 vote is no way to settle a political score.
I sure don't believe advocating a withdrawal from Iraq qualifies someone to lead the Democrats in Congress. The Democrats are going to need to get off the Iraq issue at some point. It got them one election. I doubt it will get them two.
