Honestly
What kind of equipment did Velvet have? Doggie crampons? Was he roped up? What if he'd slipped and plunged 2000 feet to an uncertain fate (probably involving doggie-smashing and/or doggie-freezing-to-death, but maybe he would have shaken it off and gone to live on a farm). Anyway, how come it's not cruelty to put an animal in this situation?

Agreed. I don't think you're the only one who is irate, but no one listens to the animal advocates as they are considered to be a notch above the "global warming" nut-jobs on the crazy stick.
"Animals have feelings. Right, that's as dumb as the idea that my Hummer is causing damage to the ozone layer."
I know I am commented several days too late but I have to say that when I heard there was a dog on the "expedition" I knew there would be witty commentary by the writers at Don't Trust Snakes. Some news events seem to be tailored to your particular world view and for your personal SPIN potential. :)
