Essential but nonexistent punctuation mark(?)

I realize that there should really be a punctuation/pluralization convention along the lines of (s), but that encompasses the possibility that there are none of the item. Perhaps (?) or (s?) could do the trick. So, for example:

"Immunize your kid(?) against deadly virus(?)"
Maybe you have no kids or live in a future utopia where deadly viruses are just a dim memory. If so, and you don't like to be verbose, I have your answer.
