“I know where I'm headed.”
ROGER THORNHILL

Friday, March 21, 2008

Had we but world enough, and time, this coyness, Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, were no crime.

Well, there's a good chance that I was wrong earlier that it was too late for endorsements by Bill Richardson and John Edwards to matter much. I had become reasonably convinced that Hillary will hang around all the way to the convention in the hope that something shakes loose, and that seems the most clintonian possibility and thus still most likely. However, Richardson's endorsement today provides valuable political cover for just about any superdelegate who still wavers between loyalty to the Clintons and the various objective and subjective reasons for supporting Obama. Although I have never been as impressed by Richardson as it's been suggested I should be, and thought his dithering endorsement courtship might go on past the conversion of the cows, it's nice that he made the sensible choice.

I thought this bit from Richardson could have been dialed back:
As a Hispanic, I was particularly touched by his words. I have been troubled by the demonization of immigrants--specifically Hispanics-- by too many in this country. Hate crimes against Hispanics are rising as a direct result and now, in tough economic times, people look for scapegoats and I fear that people will continue to exploit our racial differences--and place blame on others not like them. We all know the real culprit -- the disastrous economic policies of the Bush Administration!
That's right, hate crimes are up because of George Bush's economic policies. The man is a shrewd analyst and diplomat.
