Veronica loves Logan

Now that television's finest show is heating up again, and moving to Tuesday nights, there's truly no excuse for even the most recalcitrant, time-challenged, DVR-loving, "Lost"-obsessed fellow blogger to avoid tuning in. It's not too late to get caught up on all the twists and turns--chances are you have a friend who would love to take you though it all in loving detail.

Watch Veronica Mars . . . whose quick wit I find enchanting

This would be an excellent time for you to resolve to watch "Veronica Mars" this season. The season premiere was Wednesday, so an even more excellent time for that resolution was a few days ago, but you won't have missed that much as a new viewer. It really is the best show on television, for various reasons but mostly because the writing and performances are way, way ahead of the curve. Also, if you are into such things, it may have the best attention to continuity of any show ever. And if you should watch one episode and not be captivated, give it a few episodes. Soon you may be saying a special thanks to me for introducing you to "Logan . . . and Logan's special lady friend who I approve of wholeheartedly and without reservations."

How awkward

No sooner do I suggest that Salon.com may have jumped the shark, than they annoint "Veronica Mars" as the most underappreciated show on television. [LINK] I was about the earliest possible adopter of this exemplary show--awakening to the first episode after dozing off midway through a particularly soul-killing Mariners game--and have managed to hook a few others. It may be hard to believe when I tell you this, but I am not an uncritical person. And this is an outstanding hour of television. Wednesdays at 9 on UPN; season premiere September 28. (I suppose it's on at 8 in the Central time zone, so they can get up early and milk the corn or whatever. I wonder if the networks are ever going to yank that part of the country into the 21st Century.)

As long as I'm digressing, I'll just say it's nice to see the cognoscenti honoring a show airing on regular television. When I found Salon honoring "Veronica Mars," I had just finished reading their "If We Gave Out The Emmys" type article, notable for its frequent use of the phrase "Six Feet Under." I'm sure that's a wonderful show and all, but I do wish journalists writing about such shows would occasionally mention/acknowledge that they are premium cable shows and not regular TV shows.

And to continue digressing, I thought the whole reason I had to hear so much about how "great" the critically overrated "Arrested Development" was was that it had been canceled. That was my unwritten bargain with its backers: I would be exposed to the over-the-top praise for this not-so-funny show that tried way too hard, but then it would be off the air. Correction: "that tries way too hard. Fox putting it back on the air is a real bait-and-switch from my perspective.
