Miscellaneous Roberts Observations
- In these days of grade inflation, it's comforting to know that you still need an A/A+ average to graduate summa cum laude from Harvard Law School [LINK], and that John Roberts could be first in his class, win what likely was the most prestigious appellate clerkship in the country (with the legendary Judge Henry Friendly of the Second Circuit) and still only graduate magna.
- One Court TV guest opined that it would be hard for Democrats to successfully oppose the Roberts nomination because he is a double-Harvard-degreed "law-review type." I would be interested in knowing which nominee in recent history has not been a "law-review type" and a graduate of a top law school.
- President Bush noted in his remarks introducing Roberts that "he worked summers in a steel mill to help pay his way through college." National Review Online tells us that he was "the son of a steel company manager."
- The line from Democrats and left-leaning guests on talking-heads programs tonight seemed to be that "we" or "the Senate" will need to show Americans just how much of a conservative Roberts is. It says something that they were not launching into this process of illustration.
