The answer

It is, in fact, biathlon. Perhaps, living in a mostly gun-free culture, Europeans are strangely drawn to something like biathlon, in much the way I was drawn to bite my toast into the shape of a gun as a small child.

I'm much better now.

I'm surprised you can't make a WWII/Hitler connection out of this - biathlon, WWII, fighting the Nazis in the snow...etc. I know you can do it.
