Caffeine delivery systems
It is now possible to pay $2.25 for a "venti" drip coffee in Seattle. At Starbucks it is $1.86. According to
this site, a 16-ounce "grande" at Starbucks contains 550 milligrams of caffeine, so a 20-ounce venti has a modest 687.5 milligrams. Starbucks has
stated that its coffee averages 200 milligrams per 8 ounces, which puts a venti at 500 milligrams. (For the record, two years ago I did go off caffeine completely for more than three months, and didn't really miss it.)
Now, seeing as how I feel slightly better about myself after computing the 500 milligram figure, let's assume that is the correct number. That way, $1.86 for a venti works out to about a third of a cent ($.0037) per milligram of caffeine. It looks like I can buy a 60-count bottle of Maximum Strength No-Doz for about $6.00. Each caplet ("1/2 to 1 caplet not more often than every 3 to 4 hours." -- hah!) contains 200 miligrams. So that's caffeine for a twentieth of a cent ($.0005) per milligram.
At more than seven times cheaper per milligram of caffeine, can you afford
not to switch from drip coffee to convenient pills.
