Food for thought

If Joe Lieberman had done the right thing when he was named to the national ticket in 2000, he would not be facing a primary challenge today. He would either be Vice President or out of office. Who's to say that Lieberman's decision to divide his attention between his vice-presidential aspirations and the fallback position of retaining his senate seat did not make the difference in the absurdly close 2000 election?

I can certainly imagine that if Clinton, Gore and Lieberman had seemed to be pulling on the same oar in 2000, things might be different today. Voters expect to see an incumbent going all-out in support of his VP, and they expect to see a running mate without a too-obvious backup plan.
