Adopt early!

Amazon.com's brand new video download service went live literally moments ago at the Amazon.com website. You can download the video player and then your first TV show is free. There is a great range of movies and TV shows available for purchase (even including such obscure cult favorites as Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends), and movie rentals are also available.

What I like most about Amazon Unbox is that its creation brought one of my closest friends and his delightful family to Seattle, a development that still sometimes amazes me. Also, Amazon has chosen an especially fine color scheme for the Unbox logo.

I've seen a demo version of Unbox in operation and the video quality is exceptional. It's supposed to be much better than what you can get from, say, iTunes. 'm sure this will make watching things on the computer more palatable, although I'm still partial to my CRT-based analog device for most of my flat-screen sensory input.

My player has just finished downloading, so I need to go start exploring, and figuring out which TV show episode should be my free download. I might have to go for a classic episode of the original Star Trek, such as "Balance of Terror" or "The City on the Edge of Forever." Many such journeys are possible. Let Amazon Unbox be your gateway.
