He adapted in order to survive?

How many times are we going to hear that that kid in Missouri "adapted in order to survive"? Will no one acknowledge that his was a lousy, irrational adaptation? [Please imagine that I have filled this space with the usual caveats.]

I guess in addition to warning their children not to get into the stranger's car, parents need to point out that they can leave the car if the stranger goes away. I guess they need to tell their children that they can seek refuge with any police officers who might happen by the site of their "captivity." [Insert further pro forma caveats.]
