"If you're goin' to the city . . ."
I managed to pack, if not light, at least pretty reasonably. I had to bring a suit, which means an additional pair of shoes and, if you are me, a few different ties from which one will be chosen according to actual mood. I don't mind schlepping a bit more stuff than necessary as long as it's obvious to me where I could cut down, and that's definitely the case on this trip. I'm sure there will be a few moments of wanting less stuff and a few of wanting more.
In a decision I find very liberating, I'm not even bringing my little digicam. The photos it produces are very good for a camera of its kind, but I don't take them very seriously and there are very few times anymore where I am happy to have a bunch of crap digicam snaps in addition to the images I'll get with film and my seriously good film gear. Your mileage may vary.
My tentative plan is to concentrate on portraits of my friends and night photography. I think this will reduce the pressure to shoot a bunch of stuff during "mixed" outings, and increase the likelihood that I will return with distinctive images that are important to me. Perhaps I'll post a report sometime about how that plan turned out. It's more of a plan than I usually have.
I'm delighted that I can now easily take trains from JFK, instead shelling out $50+ per cab ride. And I'm delighted that I can get an unlimited 7-day Metrocard for $24. It is a little-known fact that one of the earliest proponents of the Metrocard hired me for my 1L summer job with the MTA legal department.
Every time I return to New York, where I lived for 5+ years, I remember something about it that I had forgotten. The first time I found I had forgotten how many people there were all over the place, the second time it was the pungency of the streets in the summer . . . and so on. I wonder what it will be this time.
