"That one's beauty!"

I made a short trip to Vancouver, B.C. this weekend and offer the following random observations:
  • On a nice, clear, crisp day in winter, Vancouver is prettier than Seattle. The main reason is that the mountains are closer.

  • I actually heard a shopkeeper say the above.

  • They drive that way in their own country, too.

  • Total autonomy when traveling is lovely.

  • Like deciding to go see a film at random. Did the "Michael Clayton" screenwriter(s) [spoiler alert, but it's been out for an age] consider the distinction, when faking one's own death, between "burned beyond recognition" and "no body"?

  • I like few things more than a really excellent fragrance-shopping experience. Besides just a delightful atmosphere and interaction, The Perfume Shoppe delivered a rare triple: things unobtainable elsewhere in the PNW . . . that I didn't even know about . . . and that were wonderful.

  • One of the big differences between Seattle and Vancouver is that there is more "urban high-rise living" going on in Vancouver, by an order of magnitude.

  • People in Vancouver are more fashion-conscious than people in Seattle. This is generally a good thing for them.

  • If Vancouver is a good gauge of trends that may make their way here, look for more fashion design, accessories, luxury goods, etc. from Germany (especially auteurs in Berlin, Hamburg, etc.) . . .

  • . . . and a resurgence of UGG boots. I did say "generally a good thing."
