I really do have better things to do than write about Salon.com . . . but, man
"It is a radically novel social, political and economic formation that deserves study alongside capitalism and socialism. Neither Adam Smith nor Vladimir Lenin captures its essence, though it has far more elements of Leninist democratic-centralism than Smithian free markets. Some have referred to this model as crony capitalism; others compare the waste, extravagance and greed to the Gilded Age. Call it 21st century Republicanism."Blumenthal writes with the manic intensity of the best conspiracy-theory websites. I search in vain for the customary references to Adam Weishaupt, the Rothschilds and the Abwehr, but the basic style is intact.
Two caveats:
- Maybe my Firefox AdBlocker is preventing me from seeing a graphic identifying this as an opinion piece. I doubt it, though.
- The URL for the Blumenthal piece does include the word "opinion." I'm assuming they will get things sorted out with the redesign and begin identifying opinion pieces as such. However, it says something about Salon that they could work for months and months on a redesign, and go live with it, without anyone noticing a lack of separation between the virtual news pages and the virtual editorial and op-ed pages. As I noted earlier, "with little separation between news and opinion coverage, the Salon institutional viewpoint has an unbecoming 'yellow journalism' quality."
