Some other underqualified nominees

I just thought I would free-associate some names of people who served on the U.S. Supreme Court without certain prior qualifications. As these are free associations, I'm not checking my work. Please feel free to do so in the comments.

Never a judge: William Rehnquist, Lewis Powell, Abe Fortas, Tom Clark, Byron White, Earl Warren, William O. Douglas, Felix Frankfurtuer, Robert Jackson, Hugo Black, Louis Brandeis, Harlan Fiske Stone, Charles Evans Hughes, William Howard Taft, John Marshall

Never a federal judge: Sandra Day O'Connor, Benjamin Cardozo, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

I'm not saying Harriet Miers belongs in such company. For the record, I think she's a pretty random choice, but surely no worse or more random than a lot of others. But here you do have a pretty distinguished group of people--that I could come up with off the top of my head, mind you--who lacked certain "qualifications" for the Court.
