Caninomics

Can you imagine how expensive puppies would be if the only place to buy them were artisanal breeders? In other words, if the "responsible" animal lovers ("RAL") succeeded in shutting down all the breeding operations and in getting everyone to spay and neuter their pets.

I wonder if they have entirely thought through their position. Do they want dogs to be the playthings of the rich, like in that old ad for Wolfschmidt vodka? Because it seems like the success of the RAL program would reduce the supply of dogs by perhaps 90 percent. I suppose the resulting high dog prices would induce more people to become "reputable breeders" (or is it "responsible breeders"), but I don't think that would make up the dog deficit.

What do you think, people who never comment? Have RAL given any thought to what the success of their program would do to the market for dogs?
