Celebrity Playlist: MWR
MWR's Playlist Release date: May 6, 2006 Total: 20 songs $19.80 [LINK] "I Have the Touch" (Track 1): "Every celebrity playlist needs a Peter Gabriel song, so let's get this one out of the way. This song helps me imagine that I have "the touch." "Soul Ram" (Track 2): "For when your 9-year-old asks, 'Mommy, why is that band called Steely Dan?'" "Sha La La" (Track 3): "A sweet and touching little song. These are reasonable expectations." "Tangerine" (Track 4): "Besides the Gabriel song, every celebrity playlist needs a semi-obscure cover. Here's mine." "I'm Not Down" (Track 5): "On those rare occasions when it occurs to me to cheer myself up with music, this does the trick." "Careless Ethiopians" (Track 6): "If you're going to put a nice reggae track on your celebrity playlist, why not go all out with one featuring Ethiopians, an obscure biblical passage (Ezekiel 30:9), Antichrist and Keith Richards? Assuming some of that isn't redundant. Plus it's a great song." "Here Comes My Girl" (Track 7): "Ah, Tom, you make it all sound so easy." "Spanish Eyes" (Track 8): "An oft-overlooked gem." "Fuckin' in the Bushes" (Track 9): "Sorry, you prudes, but I didn't write the fucking song. This plays at the climax of 'Snatch,' when the pikeys are liquidating Brick Top and his henchmen. What's not to love?" "Evidence" (Track 10): "The musical interlude from my very favorite episode of 'Homicide: Life on the Streets,' 'Deception,' in which Luther Mahoney gets his." "Little Wing" (Track 11): "Is there a prettier tune to be found anywhere in rock? A while ago I asked who was the Jimi Hendrix of rap and got no satisfactory answer. Much as I would have had no satisfactory answer to what kind of tree most resembles Goethe." "Wichita Lineman" (Track 12): "My mother made fun of me for liking this during one of her breaks from listening to Rod Stewart singing American pop standards and love songs. I don't call that engaging from a position of strength. And this isn't Glen Campbell, it's the Meters!" "What'cha Say" (Track 13): "Another nice little ditty from the Meters, from their album my uncle identifies as the funkiest record ever made. I defer to others on matters of musical funkiness." "Momentary Thing" (Track 14): "How like Rob to kick off something EPIC with a song of this title." "Slit Skirts" (Track 15): "I guess it's time to listen to this repeatedly and see if there are some good insights on getting older." "Secret Journey" (Track 16): Thanks to exceptionally fine student teaching in my 11th-grade Twentieth-Century Literature class, I know all about how this song relates to 'Siddhartha' and various other works of Hermann Hesse. I still think of that student teacher whenever I put brown ink in one of my fountain pens." "Don't Lose Your Head" (Track 17): "You know, as guilty pleasures go, it doesn't get much better than 'Highlander: The Series.' And as episodes of that go, it doesn't get much more guiltily pleasant than 'Freefall,' featuring Joan Jett as well as . . . this song. Yes, Mac certainly saved Richie's bacon that time." "Can't Find My Way Home" (Track 18): "Talented fellows, born too soon. I'm sure they'd have made superb rappers." "Tainted Love" (Track 19): "Must remember to post my 2005 holiday card on the blog at some point." "I Close My Eyes" (Track 20): "I learned about this group from 'Kill Bill, Part 2,' a film with one of the more perfectly realized endings I know of." |
