Let's say intellectually irresponsible
Upon reflection, I was probably excessive in calling Garrison Keillor intellectually dishonest. Intellectually irresponsible is probably closer to the truth. He didn't know enough about his subject and he didn't bother to learn, preferring to play fast and loose with the truth in order to put more sizzle in his piece. I think he is the kind of writer who would rather turn a nice phrase in service of his viewpoints than actually be right. When he wrote Salon's advice column, he was often able to do both at the same time.
It's too bad that Salon so often neglects basic critical editing and fact-checking of the work that appears on its web pages.
