Election Night, Act Two
I'm more of a New Yorker than she is, by the way.
Heath Shuler picks up a House seat for the Dems in the House. I'm sure he will have a more distinguished career in the House than he did in the NFL. That makes seven seats gained so far for the Dems. (7:48)
The Foley seat has just changed hands, another Democratic pickup. Another Democratic pickup in Pennsylvania over the scandal-plagued incumbent. That makes nine. (7:54)
One more for the Dems. That makes ten. (8:00)
NBC projects that Democrats will take control of the House. (8:05)
Did I ever register that my final prediction was that they would get the House but less dramatically than they hoped, and fall short of a majority in the Senate? I didn't? Well, I have emails to prove it.
Here is all that probable incoming House Intelligence Committee Chairman Alcee Hastings's official website biography says about his tenure as a federal judge: "Appointed by President Jimmy Carter in 1979, he became the first African-American Federal Judge in the state of Florida, and served in that position for ten years."
Perhaps the Republicans should have stressed that without controlling the House, they can't cut everyone's taxes.
So if Iraq really is the #1 issue for the country, does that say something good or something bad about the state of the country? On the one hand, things can't be too bad if that's the biggest issue. On the other hand, if an undertaking that has claimed such a small number of military lives becomes the most important issue to the electorate, what kind of fortitude can we expect in the face of more grave undertakings. (I do realize that the failure in Iraq is not just being judged by loss of life.)
Hastert has been reelected. It's been quite a while since a Speaker of the House has returned to the floor. O'Neill, Wright, Foley and Gingrich didn't. Perhaps not coincidentally, it's been quite a while since we had a Speaker of such modest capacity as Hastert. I'm not talking about stomach capacity, obviously.
I think that's most of the national drama that is likely to be settled tonight. And, coincidentally, it's time for Veronica Mars.
