Don't Trust Snakes DVD Pick


The Criterion Collection has just released (on one disk) Le Jetée and Sans Soleil by French filmmaker Chris Marker (who supposedly took his name from a Magic Marker). La Jetée, a short feature, may be best known for inspiring the ending of Twelve Monkeys. Sans Soleil, which I saw a few years ago, is enrapturing in ways I can't begin to describe and will show you things about the potential of film. Very strange, though, unsurprisingly. Among other things, it's a travelogue not to be missed by anyone with an interest in Japan. And there's some homage to Vertigo in there as well, which is always in the best of taste. Sans Soleil has never been available on a US-format DVD.
