Are these pundits just making conversation?

A surprising number of guests on the Sunday talking heads programs, people such as Pat Buchanan, were predicting that the Miers nomination might be withdrawn or that she might not be confirmed. I can't see how anyone who has observed the Bush presidency would conclude that he would even consider withdrawing then nomination. She is the nominee and she will be confirmed.

To listen to the commentary on Miers, you would think that (a) John Roberts was the most supremely qualified nominee ever, (b) it's rare and a little reckless to pick someone with no judicial experience for the Court and (c) other presidents didn't put their cronies on the Court. Again--I'm not defending this nomination, but how about a little historical perspective. I already listed a bunch of the prominent names with no judicial experience. Obviously, Fortas was a crony. White and Douglas might qualify too.

Something I didn't know is that, according to www.oyez.com, FDR almost chose Douglas as his running mate in 1944. He might have made an interesting President.

Speaking of running mates, but otherwise digressing, how different would the last 25 years have been if Gerald Ford had said yes to Reagan?
