Don't give up without a fight
When it became clear that the civilians had been shot by US soldiers, the marines switched to saying that the deaths were the fault of insurgents who "placed non-combatants in the line of fire as the marines responded to defend themselves". - Sunday Herald, June 4, 2006And I'm sure if the brass and bureaucrats in Washington hadn't clipped their wings, the marines on the ground could have come up with a third cover story.
I have a strong feeling that the official account of the Haditha episode will make Abu Ghraib look like a bit of good-natured hazing. This is probably why senior Marine generals are talking anonymously to the New York Times, and why when the details eventually filtered up to the top, the Corps independently went and briefed congressional leaders ahead of orders from Rumsfeld's office to say nothing. In other words, the people who may be most acutely aware that we don't actually need a Marine Corps seem to be taking Haditha very seriously.
