Time capsule
Last night I watched the tape I made of about three hours of network news coverage on September 11, 2001. My tape is from early afternoon, Seattle time, beginning about six hours after the towers collapsed. Some of the things that stood out for one reason or another:
- In Oklahoma City, police created a one-block perimeter around the jail where Terry Nichols was housed.
- Taliban spokesman: "Osama Bin Laden cannot do this kind of work. Neither can we."
- Former Clinton National Security Advisor Anthony Lake: "We need to develop a global strategy for a global alliance for a global war against these terrorists, including, for example, making sure that any nation pays a terrible price when it provides sanctuary for terrorists."
- Tom Brokaw: "It goes without saying that whoever was responsible, this was an act of war declared on the United States, a terrorist act of war."
- Tom Brokaw: "We still don't know how many people remain trapped in the rubble, what the exact numbers are."
- Tom Brokaw: "What should be the first moves once we get beyond . . . rescuing all the people who are still trapped there and sorting out the physical damage?"
- Most current and former government officials interviewed—John McCain, Lee Hamilton, James Baker, etc.—singled out improving our human intelligence capabilities as the top priority in the wake of the attacks.
- Karen Hughes gave a major briefing on behalf of the President.
