E.O. is more than just a Police lyric

What is it with me and Police lyrics lately? Maybe I'm just trying too hard with the headlines. Anyway, I don't usually comment on the amuse-gueule quotes, and it is usually a reliable assumption that they are made up.

Not always, though. I can report that I was present in Science Center C in the fall of 1985 (Science B-15. Evolutionary Biology) to hear E.O. Wilson say the above in response to a question about Stephen Jay Gould. My admiration for Wilson ratcheted up several notches immediately from its already high level.

(For latecomers, this post refers to "Gould and I agree about everything that he understands." I don't call them amuse-gueules for no reason. They disappear quickly.)
