Books meme

If you know me well, you can surmise that I'm not wild about these meme things generally. They are the Old Navy t-shirts of the blogosphere. But I'll play occasionally, if specifically called out, or just to maintain my air of unpredictability.
Hardback or trade paperback or mass-market paperback? Permanent books in hardback, consumables in paperback.

Amazon or brick and mortar? Both, although it's hard to pay $35 for a fungible commodity out of love for an old-fashioned shopping experience when the identical item can be had elsewhere for $21. Barnesandnoble.com has the further advantage of charging no tax to Washington residents.

Barnes & Noble or Borders? I'm indifferent. Borders seems to have slightly less own-brand crap for sale.

Bookmark or dog-ear? Bookmark, unless it's a mass-market paperback.

Alphabetize by author or alphabetize by title or random? Far more idiosyncratic principles than any of those, also involving aesthetics and available space.

Keep, throw away, or sell? Keep, or resist buying in the first place.

Keep dustjacket or toss it? Burn it on a moonless night when magic is in the air. Or, the other 99.99% of the time, keep it.

Read with dustjacket or remove it? Leave it and enjoy its book-marking properties.

Short story or novel? I enjoy both, but rarely choose either. I've never read any piece of fiction in The New Yorker.

Collection (short stories by same author) or anthology (short stories by different authors)? Collection. There aren't enough authors who can really pull off a great short story.

Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket? All grown up now, thanks. The first His Dark Materials book was a good read, though. The last one was kind of lame. Key villains need to die "on camera."

Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks? Varies.

"It was a dark and stormy night" or "Once upon a time"? Once upon a time some random individual, with nothing more pressing than composing a meme, felt the need for a filler question.

Buy or Borrow? Buy.

New or used? Usually new if it's in print.

Buying choice: book reviews, recommendation or browse? It really depends.

Tidy ending or cliffhanger? Typically I enjoy the satisfaction of a . . .

Morning reading, afternoon reading or nighttime reading? Night.

Standalone or series? I don't know about you, but I like to see how Tom Swift, Jr. will actually use his Atomicar in the future.

Favorite book of which nobody else has heard? Up in the Old Hotel by Joseph Mitchell.

Favorite book(s) read last year: I don't remember, which probably means a magazine :)

Favorite books of all time? Heart of Darkness, Sherlock Holmes, The Gentleman's Companion by Charles H. Baker, Jr.

Tag? Anyone who wants to prove they still read DTS.

Agreed about third book and the dying "on screen."

Thanks for playing.
