Generational Global Terror War (What's It Good For?)
I've seen no discussion anywhere about whether the national policy paradigm of a Global War on Terrorism will outlast the Bush Administration. Looking a few steps ahead—past the outcome of the troop "surge", the 2008 election, the inevitable U.S. extrication from Iraq regardless of who wins the election—it's easy to imagine how the likely dismal outcome in Iraq could invite broad-based examination of some key premises of the GWT, which has always fundamentally been a Bush initiative. Could the GWT go the way of privatized Social Security? Too soon to tell, but the "intense experience" of 9/11 continues to recede, and the results of the GWT approach are mixed and trending the wrong way.
It's hard to picture any of the plausible Democratic nominees continuing the "war" either rhetorically or as the crux of policy. I can see Hillary going in for more of a "global smart policing" concept, while Obama might urge us to focus on what we have in common with our enemies, like a shared love of oxygen.

Loved this! I've always thought the world was full of darkness and danger, no matter who calls it what. Maybe it's just the goddamn devil after all......
