Country music fans, pull your heads out
The other day, after about 24 hours of driving, I found myself in Portland with some time to kill. As I went about my various visits, my car radio came to be tuned to KUPL, a country station. Let's call it voyeurism, which seems appropriate because the first song I heard was a little ditty called "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off." Don't hold your breath for the music video.
Next came something from the unaccountably popular Kenny Chesney, whose concert in Seattle not long ago had seemingly otherwise normal people wandering around in ten-gallon hats. The song explored the again unaccountable willingness of a highly educated and successful woman to prioritize being "the woman with" Chesney's presumed good-hearted slacker bumpkin speaker ahead of any of her former ambitions.
Then, Keith Urban affected yet another grotesquely twangy parody (I pray) of a southern accent to narrate a very similar theme in the persona of his presumed good-hearted hard-workin' bumpkin speaker. Poor Nicole really does have awful taste in men. I hope this one's pathology is limited to the most dreadful clichés and the aforementioned affected accent.
Honestly, what is the value of this dreck? Is it the awful clichés? The throwback interpersonal scenarios? The low-common-denominator humor of things like that tequila song? The parodically over-the-top accents? (With all due respect to anyone needing it, if I had an accent like that I would retreat to my room with a pile of elocution tapes and have my meals sent in for as long as necessary.)
So, dear readers, you are educated men and women. You can do better than this dreadful genre, its clichés and its weird cultural affectations.

Did some long-distance driving myself lately and almost dared my radio scanner to come up with something besides religious or western music. At times there would be up to 8 country singers in a row. Chesney & Urban perhaps, plus others who probably can't access the movie queens due to indescribably offensive voices AND accents. Who lisens to this stuff??!!!
