iPod puzzle

I wonder why my iPod has a capacity of 37.15 GB, contains 23.84 GB of music and 1.18 GB of podcasts, yet has free space of just 3.09 GB. This is after I deleted roughly 10 GB of podcasts. It's rather mysterious. The free space went up to an expected amount after I deleted the podcasts in manual mode, then dropped after I re-synced with new settings for copying podcasts (so, no, it didn't just copy all the podcasts back). I'm sure there's a sensible reason, just as there must be one for the way iTunes will gratuitously unsubscribe you from a podcast if you haven't listened to that podcast in a while, without giving you a custom choice to not be so unsubscribed. Actually, I don't think there's a sensible reason for that.
